The Big Dance Effect
As everyone is aware of, unless you live Turkmenistan, the NCAA tournament starts this Thursday and sport fans of every caliber are getting excited. As you know the most exciting thing about the tournament is filling out the brackets. whether you know anything or nothing about college basketball everyone fills out a bracket to try and pick the champion of the tournament. The buzz is always in the air and gone are the days where the sports fanatic has to wait for the next day paper to fill out get their bracket and fill it out. Now as soon as the picks are finished the brackets are up on multiple online outlets. Sites such as ESPN, CBS Sports and FOX sports to name a few. I do not know the numbers but i can imagine that there are millions of hits in a matter of less than an hour. With all of this traffic what does that do for the online media marketing campaigns. Is the NCAA tournament the online superbowl when it comes add space? With millions of people going to these sites at one time and the number of participants growing each year, how much will a 4x11/2 add costs marketers and how much will marketers be willing to spend.

After reading your post, I decided to check out Facebook to see if there were any sites dedicated to the tournament. I found not only a NCAA March Madness Page, but many other pages dedicated to college basketball teams. On the March Madness page there seems to be a ton of interaction going on, whether its fans cheering for their team, scoreboard updates, or just tournament talk in general. It seems like this tournament seems to be on board with social media sites!

Nice job Jake! I am one of those crazy people with my bracket sitting beside me during the games marking my wins and losses. I actually found a link on facebook earlier this week to the ESPN page with the contest to win $10,000 for filling out a bracket. I decided to give it a shot, but then I needed to print off a bracket and the one I found on CBS and printed has a movie ad on the top and bottom of the page. This is a great idea! People are attached to their brackets this time of year and in my case, I see the movie SuckerPunch everytime I look down. You may be on to something!
ReplyDeleteGood points, Jake! And isn't it crazy how every can share their brackets on Facebook or ESPN and still "bet" on there as well?! So many options now to share your brackets and win the bet. I think social media is an awesome way to bring your friends together with the tournament because you can add friends to your team who live far away and still maintain that competitive friendship.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! Also, I have noticed that the cell phone applications like ESPN and CBS have included more advertisments on them during the past two weeks. I think that this is because of the convience that is involved in just checking the scores on your phone instead of having to turn on the TV.
ReplyDeleteEven watching old games on your phone will include either a 15 second commercial by a sponser or sometimes even a game that gets the consumer involved in the product while waiting for your image to load.
I thought that you brought up a great topic. Even though my team (Lville) was knocked out first round, I still have been following the NCAA tournament. March Maddness has everyone basketball crazed and of course social media is there to pick up facts, opinions and coverage. I love the interaction that social media offers for the tournament with the brackets.
